Winter Proper! Posted on 4th March 2026 The first week of January was snowy and cold with a final total of 340mm of snow. There was limited drifting as only the the initial falls drifted and then became too icy to move. We were 'snowed in' for 5 days and the road was not even passable by tactor or telehandler. I felt particularly sorry for birds, especially smaller species. Many came round the feeders in th garden at consumption for those few days were high. As well as the 'usual' Goldfinch, Greenfinch and Chaffinches, Blackbirds, Thrushes and Robins, many Siskins came out of the conifer forests nearby which is fairly unusual. A pair of Greater Spotted Woodpeckers arrived daily as well as A couple of Pheasants to tidy seed on the ground. The Wrens were regulaars and seem to have survived which is heartening. This ws the first day and it was thought things wouldn't be so bad, but by the next day it was apparent the road was closed! The Labrador was unfazed and thoroughly enjoyed the snow, but the Jack Russel was literally out of her depth. A view of Fordyce village with another shower incoming. |
